Date Night Makeup

Gap Jeans (old, similar here), Gap Sweater, BaubleBar Earrings, Prints by Ashley Cooper Design

My everyday makeup is pretty much always the same- a little concealer, blush or bronzer, mascara and lipgloss or lipstick. I have my favorite products and stick to them consistently. However, I do love to change things up every now and then and break out of my routine. Date nights are always a great excuse for getting dressed up and putting on some red lipstick, so I thought I would share a few of my favorite products to get glam for a night out (especially since V-Day is coming up!) With my everyday makeup already on, I added NARS Lipgloss in “Wonder”, NARS Duo Eyeshadow in “Kalahari” and NARS Eyeliner in “Via Appia” to take my look from day to night. This lip color is great because it reminds me of a less pigmented lipgloss version of one of my favorite lipsticks, NARS “Heatwave”. I wanted to play up my eyes without making them too dramatic, so I chose a neutral/smokey shadow and eyeliner.

Everyday makeup already on- BareMinerals Original Foundation in Medium Beige, BareMinerals “Stroke Of Light” and BareMinerals Lash Domination.

You can shop all of the products I used for my date night makeup here…

YSL ‘Babydoll’ Kiss & Blush in “Orange Fougueux” and “Rose Libre”, Wearing Urban Outfitters Sweater (old, similar here)

With each season, I add a few new beauty products to my routine to freshen up my look. In the warmer months, I try to keep things minimal but still want some color to add life to my face. I absolutely love the new YSL ‘Babydoll’ Kiss & Blush (exclusive to Nordstrom)- a product you can use on both your cheeks and lips. I tried out all of the colors and picked my two favorites for my complexion, “orange fougueau” and “rose libre”.  Both colors are so different from my usual bronzer (in warmth) and add just the right amount of color. I was a little hesitant at first about using the same color on both my lips and cheeks, but they end up complementing each other perfectly.

Other makeup worn: YSL Radiant Touch, bareMinerals Original Foundation, bareMinerals Lash Domination, NARS Eyeliner in “Via Appia”

A big thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post.

Sonia Kashuk Makeup BagTopShop Kohl Liner, TopShop Magic Liner, bareMinerals Original Foundation (I wear medium beige), bareMinerals Bareskin Foundation, Stroke of Light in Luminous 2, YSL Kiss & Blush in “Orange Fougueux” and “Rose Libre”, bareMinerals Bronzer in “The Skinny Dip”, Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Lipstick in “Desirable” and “Impassioned”, bareMinerals Lash Domination, bareMinerals Eyeshadow Palette in “The Power Neutrals”, Essie Nail Polish in “Resort Fling” and “Meet Me At Sunset”, bareMinerals Moxie in “Life of the Party”, “High Roller” and “Miss Popular”

A few essentials currently on rotate in my beauty routine. I’ve talked about my new found love for YSL’s “Kiss & Blush” here- it’s really the best to add just the right about of color and liveliness to your face. I keep the rest of my basics pretty simple, with neutral palettes and a subtle bronzer. Three of my absolute favorite products are bareMineral’s Lash Domination, Stroke of Light and Original Foundation. While I’ve been using the Original Foundation in medium/beige for years, I’ve recently tried out their new liquid foundation and I love it! It makes your skin look flawless and velvety soft. It gives a more dewy complexion than the original powder and feels like you have nothing on! I also think I have almost every Moxie lipgloss color (I’m addicted!), but these are my three favorite shades for spring.

P.S. Head on over here to see who won the Nordstrom $1000 gift card and two $500 gift cards!

Urban Decay Naked Flushed in “Native”, Essie Nail Polish in “Cocktails & Coconuts”, bareMinerals Minerals Veil, Lipstick Queen Moisturizing Lipstick in “Hang Ten”, Aerin Lipgloss in “Festive”, bareMinerals Faux Tan Body, Urban Decay Naked Skin Illuminating Beauty Balm, bareMinerals Faux Tan Face, Urban Decay Naked Skin Bronzing Beauty Balm

It’s that time of year when everyone is looking for the perfect golden glow without having to sacrifice the health of their skin. I’ve tested out a few different products and selected my favorites to achieve that sun kissed summer look. I’ve been using bareMinerals “faux tan body and faux tan face” a few times every other week to keep up my leftover tan from Mexico. I put it on after I hop out of the shower, wash my hands and let it dry for a few minutes before getting dressed. I’m also loving Urban Decay’s Bronzing Beauty Balm and Illumating Balm (both with SPF) for that perfect dewy, golden, glowing skin. To top it off, I’ve switched up my bronzer with Urban Decay’s “Native” palette that gives just the right amount of color. A soft neutral nail color and lip are the perfect way to compliment all of the beautiful golden shades.

Also, If you’re in the SF area tomorrow, Thursday June 5th from 6-8pm, come stop by Joie on Fillmore for a fun summer styling event & 20% off!) with myself and Nichole from Vanilla Extract. You can find more details here and RSVP to joiefillmore@joie.com

A Moment For Yourself

I’m excited to announce that I’ve partnered up with Dove to join their ‘What Pampering Means To Me’ launch alongside their new Purely Pampering products. I’ve always admired the way Dove promotes not only their products, but the importance of loving and taking care of yourself. In order to live a happy life and have great relationships with others, you have to start with yourself. Dove asked me to share three words to describe my ultimate pampering experience and these immediately came to mind: relaxing, comforting and glamorous. Taking the time to do something for myself, even if it’s a bubble bath in the evening after work or fresh new manicure, it gives me a moment to focus on how I’m doing and what my needs are. I always feel pampered after I use my Dove Purely Pampering Pistachio Cream Body Wash and Beauty Bar. My skin feels nourished and the calming scent puts me in a tranquil state of mind, feeling relaxed and ready to take on the day.

What are your three words to describe your ultimate pampering experience?

This post is sponsored by Dove, a brand that I’ve always loved and look up to.

Travel Beauty Tips & Products

I wish I could bring my whole beauty cabinet with me when I travel. Just like overpacking with clothes, I often overpack with beauty products. Thomas and I are getting ready for a big Europe trip in two weeks and I’m condensing my must-have beauty and skincare products because every ounce counts when you are packing for a long trip. I’ve narrowed it down to just the essentials and picked products that can perform multiple jobs at the same time.

Travel beauty essentials-

Skincare:

Moisturizer- My current favorite moisturizer is Clé de Peau Beauté Gentle Protective Emulsion w/ SPF (also available here). It goes beyond just hydrating, but is gentle on your skin, fights against anti-aging and has spf. It’s pricey for moisturizer, but one bottle lasts 6-8 months.
Cleanser- I’ve been using Darphin Aromatic Cleansing Balm for a few months now and I love how luxurious it is and doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight and dry after cleansing.
Makeup Remover/Toner- I’ve mentioned by love for the Arcona Triad Pads before and I don’t think I’ll ever stop using them. I stock up (two or three) at a time for fear of running out and not having them!
Mask- My body is super sensitive to travel. Planes make me swell up like a balloon- especially my face and feet. I use the Clé de Peau Beauté Illuminating Concentrate Mask right after I land- it works as an at home facial and reduces puffiness, brightens and leaves you looking refreshed.

Makeup:

Primer- Instead of a heavy foundation, I’ll use Laura Mercier ‘Radiance’ Foundation Primer over my moisturizer for a subtle glow and coverage. With a little concealer and blush, I’m good to go for a barley there look.
Concealer (and brightening powder)- Laura Mercier High Coverage Concealer completely covers my under eye circles and the brightening powder helps it last all day.
Blush/Bronzer- Le Metier de Beaute Blushing Bronzer Duet is my favorite combo so I don’t have to carry a separate blush and bronzer with corresponding brushes while traveling.
Mascara- I’ve been a loyal fan of bareMinerals ‘Lash Domination’ (and still am) but my newest mascara obsession is Buxom with the ‘Strong & Long’ Brush. You can pick from seven different brushes depending on what look you want for your eyelashes.
Lip Balm- I’ve been using EOS for years and I love this stuff to keep my lips hydrated and soft. My new favorite is the Visibly Soft Coconut Milk – it’s so yummy (and smells so good!).
Lipgloss- I don’t go anywhere without my Bobbi Brown lipgloss in “Petal”.
Lipstick- I always have lipstick on hand. Chanel Ultrawear Lip Colour in “Deep Rose” is my favorite lip color for fall.
Perfume- Givenchy ‘Dahlia Divin’ is my new favorite scent. I always travel with perfume, that’s why I prefer to buy smaller sizes to fit in my carryon.

Nude to Bold Beauty With Charlotte Tilbury

I had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Tilbury last fall when I did a live google hangout with her and a group of other talented people in the beauty industry. Afterwards, Charlotte was telling me and Annie about her beauty line and I was dying to know more! To give a little backstory, Charlotte has been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and has worked with everyone from Kate Moss to J Lo. So basically, she really knows her stuff. Fast forward to a few months ago when I heard that her line (which has been coveted in the UK for the past year) was launching in the US! I was so excited to get my hands on a few of her products and share them with you guys. I decided to create six different beauty looks ranging from nude to bold with Charlotte Tilbury makeup by using the same few products, but in different ways.

Nude Look- Charlotte Tilbury “the Dolce Vita” Eye Shadow Palette, Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blush in “Ecstasy”, Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes Mascara, Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick in “Penelope Pink”Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lacquer in ” Seduction” (my fave!) Charlotte Tilbury Rock N Kohl Eyeliner in “Bedroom Black”

Bold Look- Charlotte Tilbury The Feline Flick Liquid EyelinerCharlotte Tilbury Lipstick in “So Marilyn”,  Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blush in “Ecstasy”Charlotte Tilbury “the Dolce Vita” Eye Shadow PaletteCharlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes Mascara

*My “kiss lips” shown are the actual colors from each lipstick to give you an accurate shade.

Skin That Glows

It’s usually around this time of year, with the change of the season, that my skincare and makeup need a little boost. My summer tan has faded away, my skin’s a little drier and I’m looking for that perfect glow. I used five Laura Mercier products to create the perfect understated makeup look in less than 3 minutes.

The first step is to add an illuminating primer to your bare (moisturized) face. I’m using Laura Mercier’s foundation primer in “Radiance”- and it does just that, makes your skin look radiant! If I’m in a rush and want my skin to breathe (but still want a bit of coverage) I’ll just wear this primer and a swipe of mascara.

The next step is to apply a light and moisturizing foundation. I have a new found love for liquid foundation and I love Laura Mercier’s Smooth Finish Flawless Fluid Foundation. It gives you just the right amount of coverage and makes your skin feel and look like silk.

One of my favorite Laura Mercier products is the high coverage concealer- this stuff is amazing! It hides under eye circles and also helps reduce puffiness around your eyes.

The final step is one coat of mascara to brighten your eyes and a slightly tangerine pigmented gloss to bring a bit more color to your face!

Makeup Used:

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer in “Radiance”
Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluid Foundation in “Macadamia”
Laura Mercier High Coverage Concealer in 3.5
Laura Mercier Long Lash Mascara in “Black”
Laura Mercier Lip Glacé in “Nectar”

Wearing a Piperlime Sweater & BaubleBar Earrings

A big thank you to Laura Mercier for sponsoring this post.

Beauty Boost

For me, my beauty routine is more of a beauty lifestyle. My routine doesn’t start and end when I put on my makeup. I constantly make lifestyle choices to promote a healthier me, which I can tell has an amazing impact on making my skin look healthy.

Life is full of external factors that can wear us and our skin down. I’ve found success with combating these elements by eating a plant based diet as often as I can and exercising frequently. This includes lots of fresh and organic fruits and veggies, grains, staying hydrated and switching up my workout routine so I don’t get bored.

It’s hard to constantly maintain a healthy lifestyle, so sometimes I need a little boost with my routine. So when looking for products to put on my body, I want something that will actually make a difference without hurting the longer term vitality of my skin. A product that I was introduced to that does just that for me is Shiseido Ultimune. I apply it once in the morning and then once before bed to help give my skin that extra glow. Some improvements are more attainable than others and healthy skin shouldn’t be impossible to achieve. Since I’ve used the product, I can see subtle but noticeable changes in my skin and feel more confident knowing that I’m nourishing it and enhancing it’s natural beauty.

In partnership with Shiseido.

I’ve mentioned my strategy for packing beauty products while traveling before, but it always ends up being different every time I travel depending on what time of year it is and where I’m going. Since it’s fall over here in Europe, my main focus is on moisturizing products and ones that will last throughout the day.

I first start with concealer-bareMinerals “Stroke of Light” and NARS “Creamy Concealer” are two of my favorites. Stroke of light gives a nice illuminating glow under the eyes and NARS’s concealer hides everything. Next, I choose my foundation based on the amount of coverage I’m looking for- Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer for light, Laura Mercier Foundation for medium and bareMinerals for full coverage. After that, it’s a little mascara, lipgloss (Bobbi Brown in “Petal” is absolute favorite colors, as I’m sure you guys have noticed by now!) and eyeshadow usually for the evening. I keep my face extra hydrated by using Cle de Peau Beaute Moisturizer in the morning and evening.

Any products that you guys recommend to use while traveling?

Laura Mercier Foundation in “Macadamia”/ NARS Concealer/ Laura Mercier Brightening Powder/ Chanel Eyeliner in “Santal”/ Charlotte Tilbury Eyeshadow Palette in “The Dolce Vita”/ Buxom Mascara/ Guerlain Bronzer in “Brunette”/ Chanel Lipstick in “Deep Rose”/ Wearing Joie Blouse

To get ready in the evening, I like to add a few products that up the “glam” in my look to transition from day to night. For staters, I apply a little bit of foundation and concealer to smooth everything out and hide any blemishes. One of my little beauty secrets is using a tiny bit of Laura Mercier Brightening Powder over my concealer, which makes it last all night (or all day). My next step is to add slightly more bronzer right under my cheekbones for that contour effect. I usually don’t wear eyeshadow (I think it’s because I like my lashes so big and sometimes the combination can be overwhelming together) so I look for something understated, but still noticeable. One of my favorites of the moment is Charlotte Tilbury’s “The Dolce Vita” Palette, specifically the “Pop” shade (what I’m wearing here). I add a bit more eyeliner and mascara and finish off the look with a “Deep Rose” lipstick. Since it’s fall, I look for richer and warmer shades than usual, so I love the combination of the darker pink lip and slightly smokey shadow. It’s subtle enough that I don’t feel overdone, but I still feel ready for the night!

Holiday Beauty: Lip Color Guide

Lip Colors: 1. Burberry Lipgloss in “Oxblood” 2. Giorgio Armani Lipstick in “400″ 3. Dolce & Gabbana Lipstick in “Rubino” 4. bareMinerals Jack Of All Trades in “Lean on Me” + Estée Lauder Lipgloss in “Nude Rose” (Nail color: Essie “Clam Bake”)

The holidays are the perfect excuse to experiment with lip colors and test out a bolder shade or try something new. I’ve put together my four favorite lip colors that will pair with any of your seasonal looks.

1. Burberry Lipgloss in “Oxblood”- Wear with: A colorful ensemble. It’s not as pigmented as it looks in the tube, but adds just the right amount of color to brighten your face.

2. Giorgio Armani Lipstick in “400″- Wear with: Your little black dress. This is my favorite really red lip color as opposed to the more orangey-reds that I usually wear.

3. Dolce & Gabbana Lipstick in “Rubino”- Wear with: Your holiday sparkles. A deep mauve lipstick is always a must in my beauty bag and is flattering on almost any skin tone.

4. bareMinerals Jack Of All Trades in “Lean on Me” + Estée Lauder Lipgloss in “Nude Rose”- Wear with: A sleek and minimalistic outfit. I believe that everyone looks better with a little color on their lips, even if it’s just a shade slightly darker than your natural lip color.

BeautyKind

With the holiday season upon us and Thanksgiving tomorrow, Thomas and I have reflected on how fortunate we have been with both our personal and professional lives. We have always given back in small ways as that’s something we’ve both been taught from a young age and is important to the both of us. I feel passionate about so many causes, but I wanted to select one that I could really get behind and help make an impact upon.

After reviewing plenty of strong contenders we chose to support The Kind Campaign. I felt a strong connection to their mission to address the issue of girl-against-girl “crime” through spreading kindness. As women and girls, life is hard enough that we should be supporting each other rather than breaking each other down. Literally, the night of deciding which cause we wanted to support we were introduced to BeautyKind, a brand new online retailer of beauty products with an interest in giving back. Their idea was brilliant; give back 5% of every purchase on beauty products to the cause of the customers’ choice. These are purchases that every woman is already going to make, multiple times a year, so why not give back at the same time? It seemed like a no brainer so I decided I had to spread the word about BeautyKind. For me, I purchase so many different beauty products a year and I love now knowing that 5% of all my beauty purchases will be going to The Kind Campaign- the cause I chose to support.

The process is simple, BeautyKind let’s you choose which cause you want to support when you are signing up. If you don’t see your cause, you can apply to have it added. Once you are signed up, just shop like normal, the prices are comparable to other retailers. What’s also nice is that 1% of what you spend on BeautyKind turns into points, which can be used, for future purchases. If you choose to refer friends to BeautyKind you can earn 1% on their purchases. The rewards don’t stop with your immediate referrals but keep going with your referrals’ referrals, up to 5 circles deep.

Sign up for BeautyKind and receive 20% off your first order. Then let me know what cause you chose to support with your BeautyKind purchases!

This gift guide is for all of the beauty lovers in your life that much rather have a new set of makeup brushes over a new pair of heels! Getting dolled up for holidays is always my favorite part of getting ready. I think it’s because I use it as an excuse to double up my winged liner, add a touch of sparkle or wear a deeper lipstick shade that I’ve been wanting to try. When opting for a simpler holiday look (i.e. LBD), I use my makeup and nail color to make it pop. I’ve recently added Jin Soon’s “Bijou” polish over my red manicure to had a touch of glam and I’ve been wearing red lipstick more days out of the week than not. I also love Dolce & Gabbana’s “Ibiza” eyeshadow palette that has the prettiest jewel tone shades. What are your favorite beauty products for the holidays?

T3 Compact Dryer/ Lea Journo Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner/ Lea Journo Glossing CreamLea Journo French Plum Oil/ Wide Tooth Comb

My hair care routine is generally pretty simple, especially while traveling. I don’t want to bring a whole suitcase full of products (which I could easily do), so I narrow it down to the basics of what I need for the occasion and what type of weather I’ll be heading to. Most of the time when I’m home, I let my hair air dry and sleep with it wet, which helps keep additional heat off of it since I curl it so often. When traveling, there are many different factors that go into it- I’m up working later than usual and my hair reacts differently to the weather/water where I’m staying -so I rely on blow drying and a few products in the morning to keep my hair soft and glossy.

Using a T3 dryer is a little bit life changing. I know that sounds dramatic, but it’s true! As someone with really thick hair, I always dread blow drying my hair because it can take forever if I’m using a not-so-great dryer. I also worry about the damage from the heat and creating little fly aways and broken hairs. The reason a T3 is better than others? Well, for starters, it dries my hair faster and leaves it smooth and shiny- not puffy and dry. It’s definitely worth the investment. (plus it has a dual-voltage, so you can use it in any country as long as you have the necessary adapter)

I’m not really brand loyal with the hair products I’m using and switch them up every few months. My most recent discovery and obsession is Lea Journo. I’ve been using her Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner as well as her Gloss Cream and French Plum Oil. The products smell amazing and keep my hair healthy and hydrated. The gloss cream is definitely my favorite (I put it in after I get out of the shower) because it adds extra shine and keeps it frizz-free.

I’ve been using a wide tooth comb (I just buy them from Walgreens or whatever drugstore is closest) for years and can’t imagine using anything else. Even when I’m at a salon getting my hair done, I ask for them to use a wide tooth comb and just their hands. It has helped my hair grow longer because it doesn’t leave broken hairs from tangles and brushing too hard.

I have a few upcoming hair videos (and beauty!) that I will be posting soon as well. If you have any suggestions of videos you would like to see, feel free to let me know in the comments below or shoot me an email julia@galmeetsglam.com xx

New Year, New Skincare Regimen

$

The new year is the perfect time to refresh any outdated routine you go through and one that I’m constantly changing and tweaking is my skincare regimen. I try dozens of products every month, but only a handful get used more than once and even fewer get added to my everyday routine. As someone who has sensitive skin, I started using a few First Aid Beauty products at the end of last year and they’re now front and center in my beauty cabinet.

My day always begins with my skin, but the process actually starts the evening before. I start with FAB’s Milk Oil Conditioning Cleanser – it doesn’t require water, conditions while it cleanses, and dissolves makeup effortlessly, eliminating all of the scrubbing needed with other cleansers. Next, I smooth on the Ultra Repair® Hydra-Firm Sleeping Cream, which is an amazing overnight cream that leaves my skin firm, hydrated and dewy when I wake up.

In the morning, I splash my face with cool water and use First Aid Beauty’s Face Cleanser – I love the whipped texture and it strikes the perfect balance between gentle and effective. At this point, my skin is now the perfect blank canvas for whatever makeup look I want to go for that day. I’ve found that I have fewer steps to take (and need less of everything) when getting ready in the morning!

A vital part of my AM routine consists of having water with lemon, tea, a green juice or fresh fruit. I find that this helps eliminate puffiness, dark circles and gives me energy to start my day.

What’s your morning routine?

Tropical Beauty

When I’m traveling somewhere tropical or warm, I opt for the simplicity of tinted moisturizer during the day and then add a little bit more makeup for whatever we’re doing that evening. I keep my skin dewy throughout the day by reapplying moisturizer since it tends to get extra dry if I’m out in the sun a lot (I always use one with SPF) and add my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer on top of that. I want to keep that dewiness in my skin and let it breathe, but still have enough coverage for an evening out.

I’ll start with applying a tiny bit of concealer under my eyes and dust a small amount of bareMineral’s Original Foundation over my face. This gives me a subtle base to then add a little bit of blush or bronzer on the apples of my cheeks. A pop of color on my lips complements my new sun kissed glow perfectly (I love this Le Marc Lip Crème in Clara, it’s a gorgeous pink shade that lasts hours). Lastly, a bright and cheerful nail color is always a must on a tropical trip!

Skin Of Your Dreams

Last month I talked about my morning skincare regimen for the new year and introduced a few new products from First Aid Beauty that I’ve added into my mix. I touched lightly on my nighttime beauty routine for sensitive skin, but today’s post is all about that- getting the skin of your dreams (aka what will make your skin feel amazing in the morning when you wake up!)

Whether I’ve been shooting all day and have a face full of makeup or I’ve been inside at my desk with just moisturizer on, I always wash my face at night. This is such an important step as it not only cleanses your face from all of the dirt and debris that touch it throughout the day, but it’s also the perfect time to use products that target your skin’s specific needs. I start with FAB’s Milk Oil Conditioning Cleanser to clean my face and take all of my makeup off. I love how it leaves my skin dewy, smooth and conditioned, plus you don’t have to use water with it! (I’ve been bringing this on long flights or red eyes- no sink necessary!) Next, I use Ultra Repair Hydra-Firm Sleeping Cream to deeply hydrate, moisturize and firm my skin overnight. This is my favorite step since I tend to have dry skin and lathering it on makes my skin feel amazing when I wake up. When you’re asleep, your skin goes through its nightly repair phase and at this time it’s essential to “load” your skin with skin-loving products to enhance this process. My last step is the eyes. Even though I’m still young, the skin around your eyes is the thinnest on the body, meaning that is where wrinkles will appear first. I’ve been using FAB’s Eye Duty Triple Remedy Overnight Balm to nourish, firm and smooth the entire under and upper eye area. After that, it’s bedtime!

What’s your nighttime routine?

In partnership with First Aid Beauty.
